The safety of machine tool equipment is always an issue. Besides the ethical and moral aspects involved, machine tools, in particular, pose stringent requirements for safety features and reliability. Risk assessment is one of the crucial elements in evaluating conformity when it comes to CE-labelling of machines. METAL CUTTING EQUIPMENT section presents technical safety measures that act independently of the machine operator’s behaviour over safety instructions.
Sometimes lasers get very hot under the collar, especially when processing thick steel. To ensure that everything stays cool in the kerf, check out Trumpf’s solution for localised workpiece cooling at the issue’s LASER section. Here you will learn the centerpiece of the CoolLine option which is a separate cutting head with special nozzles that spray a fine fog of water. The cold fog is sprayed onto the material through holes in the nozzle, coaxial to the laser beam. It then settles on the workpiece and evaporates.
Against a background of increasing automation, process and machine monitoring is becoming more important. The INSPECTION/MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENT segment discusses areas in which modern monitoring systems are used, including current and future challenges. Stable machining processes offer more benefits than just longer tool life and a production area which allows low manning levels. When the process is ideally under control, even limits in terms of product design can be extended.
