In this issue

THREE companies interviewed for this issue were formed out of the owners’ desire for better food and beverage. In Java, Indonesia, Mazaraat Artisan Cheese was established by owners who wanted to consume natural, organic cheeses. Dissatisfed with the processed cheese sold in the groceries Muhammad Najmi learned to produce artisan cheese. Now he is setting up his company to become an R&D partner for other cheese producers as well.
Caught in a similar dilemma, the owners of Pure Sports Nutrition were unhappy with the quality of commercial sports drinks containing artificial ingredients or those that cannot be taken by consumers with sensitive stomachs. Sports enthusiasts themselves, Simon Kraak and Marewa Sutherland, formulated different beverages suitable for hydration, endurance, and recovery, and took into account the importance of natural ingredients, additional nutrients, and balanced formulation.
In Malaysia, Five & Two Foods wanted to do more with the already well-loved bacon, and chose to develop indulgent products such as candied bacon and bacon jams, says Georgina Fernandez. Being one of a kind, their products have become successful not only in Malaysia but in other Asian markets as well.
In short, Najmi, Georgina, Simon, and Marewa are simply ordinary consumers, but they wanted better products not only for themselves but for others as well, and had the initiative to seek out ways to create them successfully. Have you got the entrepreneurial spirit in you?
