The allure of curves
This month, Perspective celebrates the sweep and swerves of architectural arcs, arches and contours. ‘The queen of the curve’, Zaha Hadid, displays her trademark style at the Bee’ah headquarters in Sharjah, UAE — but thousands of miles away, her Sleuk Rith Institute in Phnom Penh has curves of a different sort. Both are so different, yet linked by Hadid’s trademark strength and style (page 54).
We also look at a striking Brick House in Mumbai (page 60); then Juul House in Japan (page 68) which is a symphony of arcs and bends; Timothy Oulton’s innovative Dome House and Round Houses in China (page 65); and the recently restored Dorsett Hotel in London (page 74).
Elsewhere around the world, the Historial Jeanne d’Arc in Rouen, France (page 25), pays tribute to the legendary warrior better known in the west as Joan of Arc, while London’s skyline is poised for change with scores of new tall buildings in the offing (page 30).
