Asia & beyond
One of our taglines here at Perspective is ‘Asia & beyond’, to denote our area of coverage, and this month’s issue is a perfect example of this ethos: we’ve got a special focus on Taiwan, partly in honour of 2016 being World Design Capital Taipei year, and partly because the nation is rapidly catching up with its neighbours on the design scene — see pages 55-77 for our special report.
Elsewhere in Asia, we’ve got a story on the forthcoming Skywalk for the benefit of worshippers at Kolkata’s Dakshineswar Kali temple in India (page 30); the renovation of a rundown shopping centre in Hong Kong to become Temple Mall (page 33); the Olympia 66 in Dalian (page 36); Cinemaxx Junior in Jakarta (page 42), and The Reverie in Saigon (page 47) — to name but a few.
As well as all that, 2016 also marks the 60th anniversary of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, and we’ve been partnering with them since the beginning of the year, covering various events and interviewing key architects. In this issue, we look at the REVEAL 2 Exhibition (page 26), chat with Beijing-born architect Cui Kai at an HKIA event (page 24) and ask Kenneth Tse and Aden Chan about their conceptual design and art for their exhibits at the Venice Biennale (page 20).
