GO to bed and there's a wood pigeon in our bedroom. I assume that he, she or it got in via the chimney. There’s nothing to be done now, outside it’s the blackest of nights. The pigeon and I regard each other with mutual suspicion. Me from my bed and it from its vantage point on top of a wardrobe. I switch the light off and we spend an uneventful night. But it’s a different story as soon as it starts to get light outside. The pigeon decides to fly around the bedroom, and in so doing makes a fearful noise. It blunders into furniture and windows so I decide that further sleep will be impossible and I get dressed and try to catch it. All I want to do is to release it through a window but my best efforts are in vain. I leave all the windows wide open, perhaps the pigeon will find its own way out. My son calls by in the afternoon so I ask him to look into my room. Ten minutes later, and a bit dishevelled, he's back. The pigeon was still there, it just needed someone a bit younger to catch it.
