Five new books to read this week

Idle Grounds By Krystelle Bamford, hardback (ebook) This strangely beautiful but dread-laden story is a fascinating debut. At a family gathering, a gaggle of cousins lose the youngest Abi on a summer's day full of strange goings-on. With their parents all arguing and nonplussed by Abi's disappearance, the cousins set out to find her. Bamford captures the weird bonds between cousins, the enforced camaraderie and the not-quite-sibling love. Their search includes a forest pulsing menacingly and a shady creature zipping across the landscape. The story is narrated retrospectively by an unnamed cousin who chats directly to the reader, making natty asides. Bamford has written something special. 8/10
