The living room gets our attention this issue where our focus covers everything from the latest shapes in lounge furniture, to zoning, layering and colour play. It’s all about minimal effort for maximum impact as the seasons change. But if it’s something a bit more involved that you can commit to, our Architecture ’24 supplement is full of the best practices to seek out, examples of new builds, extensions and renovations to fuel your imagination, and our hot take on the latest trends and innovations in the industry to help you on your way.

In this issue, we’ve shone a spotlight on what makes Scotland a brilliant summer holiday destination. Flick through the pages and you’ll see the golden sands of Gullane, where eternal traveller Laura Thomas fell in love with East Lothian’s laid-back vibes and put down roots. Head north to Aldourie on the shores of Loch Ness for a pristine restored castle and gardens that would wow the most jaded of tourists. Or how about an off-the beaten-track getaway, like North Berwick’s Lookout – so new, only our writer’s feedback is in the guestbook.

As the sun makes its first tentative appearance above Scotland, all chat has been about prepping and dressing our gardens. We’re talking souped-up planters, upgraded sheds, what to sow, how to light, and where to find the best advice. Our dedicated gardens special starts on page 56 but you’ll notice throughout this issue that we’ve not been able to stay indoors. We take a peek around the home of Derek Jarman at Dungeness (page 46), but the late artist-activist’s house cannot be considered in isolation; it’s inextricably linked to his famous garden on the shingle beach on the Kent coast – a perfect love letter to the life he lived here in equal partnership. Likewise, on page 206, gardener and artist Bella Hoare has found ways to connect her home and studio with what lies beyond her windows. She has spent the last two decades cultivating the land around her home, Gasper Cottage, which she has worked into the botanical-inspired paintings that form part of her first solo exhibition. Even in our bathroom focus, on page 87, we’ve taken our ablutions out into the fresh air for some au naturel bathing. Gather up your must-haves – favourite chair, mug, storm lantern – and head outside. Oh, and don’t forget your copy of the mag.  

Purveyors of provenance. No, not the name of some indie band of the mid-1990s, but what this special Collector’s Issue of Homes & Interiors Scotland has shown me we are. Putting this edition of the magazine together has confirmed that heritage matters. Each of the long-read stories, whether on interior design or architecture, has the same message: preserving what we’ve got, working with a building’s foibles and flaws, is more important than buying new.

Wellness, there’s scope to boost it everywhere in our lives: where we position the furniture to optimise natural light, how to fit in that exercise class before heading to work, why it makes sense to put down the phone long before we turn in for the night. This issue of the magazine is dedicated to helping you find ways – big or small – to improve your sense of well-being.  

We’ve devoted this edition of Homes and Interiors Scotland to art, selecting homes, builds, gifts, recipes, exhibitions, outfits even, that reflect that sentiment: artful spaces and places, some decked out with canvases, others dappled with cushions or pretty collections of ceramics, a sculpted light, a well-conceived outfit, but all with art at the core.

It’s difficult to put an age on good design. We can take a stab at when something might have been made, but if it’s good – and I mean really good – it should be timeless. And timeless design is worth investing in. Our Collector’s Issue celebrates just that.

Top of the agenda for the new year has to be our physical and emotional health. Whatever ‘wellness’ means to you (daily meditation or simply a solo coffee while flicking through your favourite interiors mag), taking care of ourselves is a priority, so we’ve dedicated our very first edition of 2023 to the idea of wellbeing.

Inside this issue you’ll find a Christmas special with a difference, and a focus on our nation’s vibrant art scene. There’s also a dedicated look at the most used (but most overlooked) room in the house: the bathroom. This has to be a practical space, but functionality these days is no longer at the expense of aesthetics, as we show, starting from page 73. The Hebridean Baker (page 22) is the very personification of what makes this country great, while time-honoured native crafts like Fair Isle knitting (page 99) show how quality is the gatekeeper to longevity.
