When Lady Elizabeth Marvyn was lost in the woods, some
humble folk from Ufton Nervet helped her home. In return
for this kindness, she gave them ‘dole’ – bushels of wheat to
make bread and cloth for garments. This first occurred in
1581 and has been repeated in some form annually down the
centuries. Now, parishioners receive two loaves of bread and
sometimes towels from the local landowning family.
