Welcome to the May edition of Model Boat Magazine which finds itself in a completely different world compared to the one I was one in just four weeks ago! I’m afraid the unavoidable topic of Coronavirus (aka COVID-19) is affecting us all (without exception - unless you are already living like a hermit) and the magazine, like all the others in the MyTimeMedia Group (and beyond) is enduring very heavy restrictions. Because of the huge reduction in newsstand sales (i.e. W H Smiths), the publishers have enforced a very tight budget on us; 66% down tight which means our contributor budget will not be what it was for the foreseeable future. I have already contacted a large number of regular and new contributors and the response has been very humbling; many of you forfeiting payment rather than see this great old magazine go down. We do still have a small budget, so payments (lower than normal) will still be made but I have been instructed not to commission any new articles. That said, that does not stop you from contributing them; I have been very lucky so far and have not actually commissioned that many, the natural flow of input from you all has maintained a very nice balance of content and with some encouragement, has broadened it. Take care everyone – and if the Government says stay at home - ‘stay a home!’ All the best, Martyn Chorlton.

Contributing to this magazine is not as scary as you think; all I need from you is a reasonably well-written chunk of text on a Word document, and some nice, sharp images to go with it. It’s as simple as that! Yes, if you are a ‘first-timer’ (to me) then I will send you some guidelines, which detail what I do and do not like to see and I like it when you discuss how many words and how many images you will be sending in; remember they are guidelines and I will not throw the article back at you if you have not followed them to the letter (nobody has come close yet!). For example, we ideally like about 3,000 words with about 25-30 images (minimum 1mb Jpeg); this gives us a nicely balanced article which is good on the eye. Some recent articles you may have noticed (some of you have really noticed) seem a little word heavy and lacking images. This is what happens when a contributor sends in an article which you have already committed to publish, and its 7,000 words long and only has about 15 images to go with it! This happens more often than you think, and these kind of scenarios are when I really earn my keep making them palatable for you, the all-important and much-valued readership.

"By the time this edition of Model Boats magazine drops on your doormat, we will either be in the depths of winter or the sun will be shining, the bulbs will be pushing through and the birds will be singing more than usual. As much as I don’t like the cold any more than the rest of you, I do hope that the seasons remain on track in effort to dispel the fact that global warming is real; I fear that that hope is nothing more than a pipe dream! Some of you will be coming out of hibernation earlier than others; I even managed to finish a couple of projects myself which ‘forced’ me to the pond side earlier than planned. 
This edition of the magazine is filled with a number of articles which were planned for 2019; one of them in particular is much awaited by many of you and I apologise for it not appearing sooner. Dermot Curnyn’s excellent Patria build has had quite a following and I completely miscalculated the fact that the second part was not in my grubby mitts before publishing the first part – you just can’t get the staff (so I’ve been told!). We have a couple of new contributors this month including Chris Watton (Vanguard Models), who also advertises with us.  
On that positive note, please keep the contributions coming and don’t forget to send your diary dates in nice and early for your all important event in 2020.        "

"Following a very pleasant gathering at Ron Dean’s establishment in mid-December, I was left heartened that the magazine, on the surface at least, appears to be doing quite well. One thing I was encouraged by was the amount of people who excitedly showed me pictures of the magazine in digital form, which for subscribers arrives before the hard copy and before the general public get a chance to whip it off the shelves. It was nice to see and I gathered good evidence that many of the subscribers like to have the option of both the old and new methods of viewing the magazine. I was also enthused by the amount of people who wanted to chat about ideas for articles and those who have already committed, returning to come up with other options and scenarios; I left with a reasonably sized box under my arm (HMS Mimi build to be completed before I meet them all again!) and a good feeling that all was well. 
However, I’m long enough in the tooth to know never to take things for granted and I am certainly grateful that I’m still at the helm of this great old magazine in 2020 and you’ll be pleased to know (well some of you at least), that I have no intention of giving it up just yet. "

"Welcome to the final edition of Model Boats magazine for 2019; a year, for myself at least, which has rocketed by! Despite doubling my usual annual mileage in the process, I am still no nearer to visiting the many clubs that I planned in my head to visit; hopefully I shall make that up next year. I’ve already lost count of how many shows and events I have been to and without exception have enjoyed everyone, thanks in part to the increasing number of familiar and friendly faces who partake in this broad hobby. 2020 will be no less busy and the calendar is already beginning to fill, so once again, if you would like me to pitch up for an open day or similar event, you need to ‘bag’ me early; I’m a first come, first serve editor! There was one weekend last summer when I was invited to four events, ranging from 100 to 500 miles away!
That just leaves me to say thank you to all the great people who have supported us throughout 2019, including those who have committed to a subscription and as a result our figures continue to rise and secondly, to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year; see you all in 2020. "

"Welcome to the December 2019 edition of Model Boats Magazine which, as always, aims to dip its toe into as many aspects of our hobby as possible. It would and sometimes can, be very easy to become a little depressed this time of year following the changing of the clocks and the relentless rain that this autumn is bringing to us so far (if you’re not getting it, you are extremely lucky!). However, this is a great time of year to consolidate where you are in the hobby and to take a look in the workshop to see what projects need finishing off, or maybe starting from scratch. 
Despite this month’s mag being the 76 page version, I have surprised myself how many features we have managed to cram in. This has mainly been aided by the usual, near end of year flurry of show and event reports which are proving to be popular with the readership. It’s a nice and easy way to promote model boat clubs and individuals who do not usual appear in the magazine as part of build or ‘how-to’ type article. Diary dates is understandably bereft this month but please start sending your 2020 plans to me ASAP so I can plan my own calendar for the year, which is already beginning for fill. "

Even though I may not give the impression, I do have a plan every month as to what is going in and what isn’t. Specials, by there very nature, are usually themed and planning work must begin a lot earlier than a standard issue because you need particular people to produce specialist articles. However, as with all plans, not everything goes to schedule and sometimes, despite commissioning a task, not every contributor can deliver. My original idea for this special was a kind of back to basics guide, which was in response to the number of requests I have had over the last 18 months, asking for more introductory-type subjects to help those modellers who are either joining the hobby for the first time or who are returning after that career/bringing up a family break. All I can say is, I think I have partly achieved that, but I know there are several subjects still to be covered. With the latter in mind, this edition of Model Boats Magazine is a cross between my original idea, topped off with a good spread of inspirational designs and ideas which I think we can all run with in our own way. The cross-section of subjects covered in these pages certainly gives a flavour of how big this hobby is and regardless of your specialist interest, quite a lot of them will be useful to all of us, regardless of your experience. 

"Every now and then, a ‘call to arms’ actually works; not that is hasn’t before for me, but in the past month I have gained more new contributors and commissioned more articles since taking over the helm! A number of these commissions are from people who have never written for the magazine before and had convinced themselves that they were not good enough to write, let alone build, while others have been motivated to rattle the keys once again after a break. This is great news as this magazine is yours and, while I do have some modicum of control over what goes in and what doesn’t, I’m generally at the mercy of the material that is supplied to me. If you want to see more of a particular subject please don’t hesitate to let me know, although be prepared for my standard reply of ‘do you fancy writing an article yourself?’ Don’t forget to visit your very own Forum at www.modelboats.co.uk. It’s quieter than most, but the welcome is always friendly and you won’t get torn apart if you ask a daft question – I ask them all the time, it’s the only way to learn! The Facebook page is also worth a visit. 
In the meantime, enjoy your hobby and let’s make sure we look out for each other."

"Welcome to the October edition of Model Boats Magazine which may, accidently be a record breaker because we have managed to squeeze 16 articles in this month. One of the reasons for this, is that we are receiving an increasing number of event reports which has the multiple positive effect of promoting more clubs and their members and visitors boats to a wider audience. Most people like to show off their boats and this is a good way of getting them into the magazine, coupled with the new style Reader’s Models. The more events and clubs we can promote the better, raising the profile of this hobby so as to attract as many newcomers as possible. 
All contributions and contributors are most welcome, especially from the many that used to produce articles and reviews for Marine Modelling International. Several ex-MMI contributors are already on board, but there is always room for a few more. We are also on the hunt for budding new designers who fancy having a crack at a plan or two; I know the internet is awash with free plans but it would be nice if Model Boats can keep contributing so as to keep this great hobby of ours fresh and alive. If you want to contribute – please do, you will be made most welcome!
