February brings a glimmer of hope; snowdrops and the .frst of the dafodils dare to bloom, birds sing louder, some bumblebees wake up.Robins, blackbirds and thrushes are now on the last of the autumn berries – from pyracantha, holly and ivy. Leave halved apples and grated cheese on the ground for birds and think about using what’s lef of bare-root planting season to plant a berrying shrub – it’ll ofer birds winter food for years. We’re well into breeding season for foxes now; you may hear the shriek of the female at night, followed by the ‘hup-hup-hup’ of the male. Soon, their cubs will be playing on the lawn. We may yet see the worst of winter, but spring is on the breeze.
