It's official. My grandmother is a fan of Boneshaker (she especially liked the bear on the cover of issue 5) and I'm stoked! Born in 1919, she grew up in North London and bicycles were a big part of her early life. In fact, her parents actually met whilst out on a ride organised by their local bicycle club, which were fantastically widespread back then. Courting by bike was just how people rolled, albeit on solid rubber tyres and dodging piles of horseshit instead of manhole covers. She speaks fondly of the streets of London in which she grew up - how they were alive with people, bikes and horses and not dominated by cars as they are today. Imagine that! 

The history and legacy of our two-wheeled friends really are quite something, as are the associated memories that pedal along with them; very much worth remembering and indeed, celebrating.

Like all the best rides, it’s been a journey into the unexpected.

Modern life is in an endless hurry. Parcels delivered next day, same day, same afternoon, news rolling 24hrs a day, faster computers, faster cars, faster food. We’re galloping to the grave, putting ourselves under ever greater pressure to get everything done on the double. 

But sometimes the best things come slow. Cycling reminds us that there’s more to each journey than its destination, that we get more from life if we don’t rush it. This issue of Boneshaker’s been a long time coming; longer than we expected, certainly. But, after gathering stories about lake-jumping, building cargo bikes, racing with missing limbs and riding in search of the search of the simple life, the issue’s come together at last. It’s been a wonderful journey. We hope issue #12 is worth the wait. 

Cycling makes me feel alive. Not in the sense of being warmed from cryogenic sleep, more like doing a dance in a hailstorm in my underpants. It wakes me up. It pins me to the noticeboard of life. And Issue 11 of Boneshaker is full of bright jubilant blinks of art, music, danger, wonder, joy and strangeness that whisk the tears from your eyes like a downhill ride on a blustery day. 

If you've got a bell on your bike ping it, if you've got a horn on your bike honk it and if you've got nothing else just pull up your underpants, let go the brakes and sing. 

Milestones are a cyclist’s friend. There by the roadside, paint flaking, perhaps coiling with ivy, they remind you how far you’ve come, tell you how far you have to go, reassure you that you’re on the right track. The word ‘milestone’ has also come to mean any significant point in life, a moment whose passing signifies change and growth. People often talk of birthdays as milestones – waymarks on the journey through life, whose unknowable ultimate destination we all share. 

Boneshaker’s reached issue 10 - a milestone in all these senses. And a bit like a birthday. But it’s not just our birthday: Boneshaker would not – could not – exist without the wonderful people who share their stories and their pictures, and who keep the dream alive by reading it. So slip a couple of beers into your pannier alongside this here issue, roll out to your favourite spot and join us in celebrating.

‘Ordinary things wear lovely wings,’ wrote the Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh. I’d like to think he had a bicycle in mind when these words came to him. Certainly, Kavanagh rode bicycles. He grew up in Ireland in the early part of the 20th century, when the bicycle was a fundamental tool of rural life, a life Kavanagh keenly and often beautifully observed in his poems. Then, the vast majority of bicycles were sturdy, black, steel-frame roadsters. They were utilitarian machines. They were built to last. They cost ten pounds. 

Advances in technology mean that you can now spend £10,000 on a featherweight bicycle made from futuristic materials with electronic gears. Yet for most of us the bicycle remains an ‘ordinary thing’, something we use daily to go about our mundane business. Because it has ‘lovely wings’, though, the bicycle still plays a unique part in our experience and holds a place in our experience and holds a place in our hearts, as the pages of this magazine affirm.

Ever eaten a bear? Raced your bike through a strange Austrian's apartment? This issue tries both – as well as wild adventuring, philosophical questioning and simple championing of the bicycle as a tool for social change. There’s poetic intimacy and inappropriate underwear, mind–body wrangling and pioneering bravado on a bike held together with string. But the chain that drives all this is the humanity of the riders and the pure, instinctive fun that bicycles bring. 

The other day we headed out on an Audax through freezing fog and ancient villages, and found just that agile sympathy, those smooth ways among stony tracks. Calmed by the pedals’ perfect revolutions, the world draws closer. The body is poised and pulsing, the mind is free to wander where it will, the senses alive to the land as it tumbles by.

I generally suffer from winter-denial. This year is worse than usual. I do not have any full-length trousers, having spent the last few months systematically adapting all of my longs into shorts. As much as I resist, however, London Winter is on its way. When it is raining, windy or just 700 types of grey, it can be tough to leave the house. But it is never as bad as I think once I am on my bike. It often surprises me. But then, cycling does that a lot. 

I’ve been lucky to have a job where I get to spend time with lots of people who ride bikes in the UK. Hearing their stories, challenges, fears and joys is a privilege and an inspiration. Cycling is different for everyone. It is one of those incredibly personal experiences, yet at the same time grants instant membership to a worldwide club. 

The pages of Boneshaker #7 offer a peek into this world. It is the perfect accompaniment to a hot cup of tea (and cake) after a chilly ride home.

In the UK the phrase “On your bike!” has had bad press. Politicians and scary neighbours have been shouting it at kids ever since the first hobby-horse. It really means, “get out of my hair, you rebel soul!” But Boneshaker is here to reclaim those three perfect syllables. It will not get red-faced and wag its finger. No, instead it will seduce with the whirr of spokes and the hum of tyres on open roads. From Africa to Goa, from New Orleans to Guatemala, from the Appalachians to the pulse of London beats, all the way to your very own backyard. “On your bike!” Issue 5 sings from the rooftops.

Boneshaker believes in the power of words, the beauty of images and the love of cycling. We hear about the art of bike dance, bike design, even about bikes themselves making art – and so the simple, joyful convergence of bikes and beauty and life are reaffirmed.

Since helping to set up and run a community bike project here in Bristol, my eyes have been opened to the breadth of people and projects around the world doing great great things with bicycles. And what impresses me most about the vast majority of these is the humanity and desire to do things for the greater good that almost always seem to be an integral part of them. 

Boneshaker is an attempt to bring together some of these people and projects, both on a local level starting with my hometown of Bristol, UK – where there is a steady-growing, vibrant bicycle culture – to further afield and around the globe. It is my hope that the following pages will both inspire and entertain, raise awareness and bring a smile to your face... and appeal to both bike-heads and to those who may not yet even have experienced the true joy and freedom that can be found from our two-wheeled friends.
