It’s mid-engine month at Auto Italia. As the amazing Bertone Lancia HF Stratos Zero hits UK soil, we reflect on its significance in design history. Not only that, but we profile three of Italy’s absolute mid-engined pioneers: ATS 2500 GT, Ferrari 250 LM and Lamborghini Miura, the latter a spectacular homage to the very special Jota. This month’s Auto Italia is full of unique surprises. 2022 marks the 75th anniversary of Ferrari and to celebrate we’ve plenty about Prancing Horses in this month’s issue. The Alfasud was famously Alfa Romeo’s first ever front-wheel drive car, but this month we have a story on an all-wheel drive one: the incredible twin-engined Alfasud Bimotore. Another sporty mid-1970s Italian is profiled, too, with the Fiat 131 Sport/Racing, while Fiat’s new 500X Sport gets a road test outing. Three hundred issues of Auto Italia – that’s the happy landmark we’re celebrating this month with a bumper issue that includes our favourite ever Ferrari features and each of our writers’ personal highlights over 25 years. What are the best engines ever conceived in Italy? That’s the question we’re attempting to answer in a major two-part feature. This month it’s engines from two to six cylinders, and we’ve nominated a stellar congregation: Fiat-Abarth 595, Lancia integrale twin cam, Alfa GTV ‘Nord’, Fiat Coupé 20v Turbo and Alfa 147 GTA V6 Busso. We also ask another big question this month: was it Ferrari and Pininfarina or Lamborghini and Bertone that triumphed in the epic battle for design supremacy that ran from 1965 to 1980, from Miura to Berlinetta Boxer?
