You could say we’re doing a ‘double Drogo’ this month with two Drogo-themed Ferraris. 2022 marks the 75th anniversary of Ferrari and to celebrate we’ve plenty about Prancing Horses in this month’s issue. Not only do we have a full road and track test of the new 296 GTB – Ferrari’s first ever V6 road car – but we do a run-down of the 75 greatest cars ever made at Maranello. We love to celebrate anniversaries at Auto Italia and birthdays don’t come much more golden than that of the Lancia Stratos, which turns 50 this year – and expert Karl Ludvigsen recounts his personal tale of the Stratos this month. We also have a twin test of Lancia’s rallying predecessor, the Fulvia Coupe HF, in both 1300 and 1600 HF variants. History seems to be repeating this month, as we feature a string of cars that mingle past and present. We have several new ‘restomods’ – including a modern Ferrari 250 GT Breadvan, a 21st century Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale and a rebooted Ferrari 250 GT SWB – plus a memorable encounter with the exquisite Alfa-engined Effeffe Berlinetta. Imagine a Ferrari so secret that not even the factory at Maranello knew about it. That’s the incredible story of Pininfarina’s Ferrari Testarossa-based F90, built for the Brunei royal family, that we’re able to tell exclusively this month. Three hundred issues of Auto Italia – that’s the happy landmark we’re celebrating this month with a bumper issue that includes our favourite ever Ferrari features and each of our writers’ personal highlights over 25 years. What are the best engines ever conceived in Italy? That’s the question we’re attempting to answer in a major two-part feature. This month it’s engines from two to six cylinders, and we’ve nominated a stellar congregation: Fiat-Abarth 595, Lancia integrale twin cam, Alfa GTV ‘Nord’, Fiat Coupé 20v Turbo and Alfa 147 GTA V6 Busso. We also ask another big question this month: was it Ferrari and Pininfarina or Lamborghini and Bertone that triumphed in the epic battle for design supremacy that ran from 1965 to 1980, from Miura to Berlinetta Boxer?
