设计用于注塑成型的超短碳纤维增强热塑性塑料（CFRTP）系列已被证明始终优于短纤维和长纤维热塑性塑料，在复杂的几何形状中尤其如此。三菱化学研发的此类KyronMax 材料，不仅优于传统的热塑性复合材料，而且还优于金属。由它生产的车顶结构连接/ 支架，能够提供与压铸钢相当的机械性能，且重量降低79%，成本降低38%。
通用航空采用纤维增强复合材料已有60 多年的历史。20世纪90 年代，碳纤维复合材料开始进入通用航空领域。此后，应用于这一领域的碳纤维“含量”不断增加，而新的轻型运动飞机（LSA）的发展为复合材料带来了更多机会。
不仅有着良好的性能效益，增强塑料被越来越多地认为是具有可持续性发展的材料。玻璃一直是传统上最常见的增强材料，但如今有了越来越多的替代选择，包括原生和再生碳纤维以及广泛的天然和矿物纤维。《高性能、可持续性的增强塑料》一文详解了增强塑料的近期应用与发展。
