Food safety special AS I PUT together the May 2015 issue, I see a number of newsfeeds about product recalls in my inbox, the latest of which reports glass shard in a chicken and potato product. While product recalls may seem like an all-toocommon occurrence, we always hope it never happens to us. Well, this issue brings to you another special on food safety. This time we take a look at how Singapore’s Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) and National Environment Agency (NEA) keep the city’s food products – some 90% imported –safe. We interview leading agro-business company, Betagro, which was the first manufacturer in Thailand to adopt e-traceability in its supply chain. We also feature solutions such as Eagle Product Inspection’s x-ray technology for pre-packed food products. Packaged food like mixed nuts, fruit and salads, and ready meals, to name a few, are among the most challenging to inspect since each pack contains multi-textured items, says Eagle’s Jeff Jia. X-ray technology that discriminates by chemical composition and not only by density variation is more accurate in identifying foreign bodies and contaminants in packaged products.
