Last month the design world suffered a great loss with the untimely death of
Jaya Ibrahim, in this issue we pay homage to his legend and celebrate him
as an Indonesian designer who was an inspiration to many designers around
the world.
Despite this tragedy the design industry certainly seems to be celebrating.
There has been so many occasions these last few months; prestigious
events, parties, inspirations and young talents who emerged to steal our creative hearts. Our pages
are filled with content that inspires, as we joined in this celebration of the design world together with
YOU, our readers of Indonesia Tatler Homes.
In this issue we start our coverage with a compilation on the biggest annual design event; Salone
Del Mobile 2015 reporting on the latest stories from our local design industry. This special issue
also features various stylish homes and innovative architecture, united through their ‘smart design’
concept. We speak with many talented individuals in our interview section, including the proprietors
of Leica, Saniharto, RR Atelier to Niro Granite. We also bring you the insights of the main players of
three well-known design firms; Nataneka, Francine Lestari and Hawawinata & Associates.

Welcome our year-end, New Year issue. If you’re reading this in December, all of us here at Indonesia Tatler Homes would like to wish you a happy and blessed New Year. If you’re reading this in 2017, we hope the party hangover doesn’t last too long!
This issue is a bit special issue for us. Because we know that most of you will have done your Christmas or post-Christmas shopping by the time you read the magazine, we’re focusing much more on stunning properties rather than product reviews and roundups. After all, now is the time to start planning your dream home—and even plan your travels around luxury living.
As such, we take an in-depth look at a unique villa complex on the Caribbean island of Mustique: a villa noteworthy not only because its inspiration came from the island of Bali, but also because the man behind the concept was none other than the late David Bowie, who died around a year ago leaving behind a monumental legacy. As well as this impressive architectural wonder, we look at Bowie’s little-known but strong ties with Indonesia.
Elsewhere in the issue, we meet Belgian landscaper François Goffinet, whose work is based on the philosophy of a harmonious relationship between man and nature. For Goffinet, the art of gardening is like making music—it can make your whole body vibrate through majestic harmonies. Now, he has designed a collection of garden furniture in response to the demand for elegant pieces, and he has also created a range of garden ornaments.
We also take a peek at some of the recent happenings in the world of interiors and decor, including the 2016 edition of the Indonesian Contemporary Art & Design Festival, also known as ICAD. Now into its seventh year, the exhibition saw artists and designers such as Agung Kurniawan, Budi Pradono, Eko Nugroho, Hermawan Tanzil and Oscar Lawalata participate. We do hope you enjoy the issue and again would like to wish you a blessed 2017.

September issues are always special for those of us who work in the media. They represent the end of one season and the start of another—a kind of renewal or rebirth. This is also true of Indonesia Tatler Homes: our September issue is brimming with new ideas that we hope will take root in your minds and inspire new beginnings in your lives. 
As well as our regular content, comprising tips, tricks and helpful hints on how to make your home and your life absolutely fabulous, we feature some of the most stunning developments in the country and the region. These include a residential home designed by locally renowned designer Yuni Jie, a luxurious penthouse in Surabaya, a new project in the Kapten Tendean area and much more. We also add a colourful twist to the mix as we take a peek into the interior of the office of social media company Qubicle, as well as one of the most-talked-about new restaurants in town, Kila Kila. 
The issue is also something of an “art issue” since we see how the work of legendary architects Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid and Oscar Niemeyer has been transformed into a futuristic jewellery collection: check out our Accessories section for more details. We are also celebrating the inaugural edition of Art Stage Jakarta, which was held in August. This must-see event was a resounding success and will surely become one of the most significant art happenings in Asia.
Meanwhile, bringing us back to what makes September so special for many of us—the fall/winter fashion collections from the world’s leading brands—we also feature Bottega Veneta, which successfully and spectacularly crossed over from fashion to lifestyle at Salone del Mobile 2016.

Behind every stylish design, structure or artwork there’s a great mind—someone who perhaps breaks conventions, barriers and, indeed, the rules to achieve success. All of this and more is true of “architect diva” Zaha Hadid, whom we sadly lost earlier this year. The world of architecture—and the world in general, such was Hadid’s impact—has mourned her passing, and we pay homage to her this issue. We’re also sad to say goodbye to local legend Han Awal, founder of the renowned architecture firm Han Awal & Partners.
But every end also means a fresh start, and this issue is packed with ideas that will help you transform a house into your dream home this summer season. We start with an in-depth report covering Salone del Mobile.Milano 2016, recently held in Italy. This huge expo was packed with innovations and ideas that are sure to spark your imagination, even if you were unable to make it to the actual event. We also meet flourishing young local designer Felix Tjahjadi, whose name is sure to become more familiar to all design aficionados in the future. Felix is an expert on window display designs and his work has included projects for fashion brands including Hermès and Jade.

These include a historical building in Yogyakarta that was transformed into a unique home, a minimalistic house design in North Jakarta, and many more residential projects. And as it’s the summer season and you may be spending more time with your kids, we look at what’s trending in the children’s design world. After all, while we’ve already lost two big names in design and architecture this year, we should always remember that the children are our future. Like us, he’s inspired by the next generation of artists, as well as the contemporary art scene in Indonesia. We also get to chat with legendary architect I. M. Pei and muralist Ines Katamso, who explains the unique challenges—and also the unique opportunities for creative expression—that this art form can bring. Meanwhile, our cover showcases a playful yet glamorous residence in Portugal designed by the daughter of Graça Viterbo, Gracinha Viterbo. Welcome to our September issue, one of the most important of the year and one that is packed with inspiring new collections and dazzling designs. But before I get into the magazine, I would like to ask a simple question: what object, building or other item would you say boasts the best design? I believe none of us can answer this because every design is unique. Different forms give us different solutions and different inspirations, completing our lives in many different ways. We like to think of Indonesia Tatler Homes as the curator of these world-class designs, all of which were born from different ideas, philosophies and ideologies.
After all, when you run a cover story featuring the stunning residence owned by American football player Tom Brady and his supermodel spouse Giselle Bündchen, you know you’re in good company. Located between the dreamy blue Pacific Ocean and the sprawling Santa Monica Mountains, this European-style residence was designed by leading architect Richard Landry, and his profile became one of the highlights of this issue. And in our Sanctuaries section, we present some of the most luxurious condominium projects in both Jakarta and Singapore. Then there’s the hidden house in the middle of the Joshua Tree National Park in California, designed by veteran American architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg.
Can it get any better? Of course! We also met up with Spanish artist and designer Jaime Hayon earlier this year, with the result an exclusive interview featured in this issue just for you. He appears alongside two other big-hitters in the worlds of interiors and design, Laura Kirar and Grachina Viterbo. Most of these residences were influenced by the richness of the past blended with modern contemporary touches.

For example, we lift the lid on a premium condominium project boasting amazing views of the Bay Bridge in San Francisco, which was designed by Indonesian interior designer Jonathan Rachman. In Vienna, we turn our attention to an apartment located in a beautiful, classical property built at the turn of the century.

Here in Indonesia, we take a tour around an American-style residence in South Jakarta area and also look at a property packed with pieces from the owner’s exquisite art collection.
