I have beheld the roots of relationships ensue between them and the places they inhabit. They call the Bay home. They often pack out more than they pack in, picking up any garbage they can manage. Their considerations of the impact of their actions on wildlife and their environment grant a high score on my exam. While the niche aesthetic of the grassroots ski bum was intoxicating to me as a kid, that lifestyle was perched atop a nest of reverie, dishevelment, and a proletariat aura. the ski bum. There’s a constant dialogue around sustainability, authenticity, and the feasibility of snow culture as it exists today.

At a few girls’ weekends, I’ve been determined enough to build my own fire, even when my friends weren’t super keen to
sit outside; I just enjoy the process and the results. It’s a simple but rewarding task. Since that night last fall
I’ve decided I like being the one to make things burn too. Maybe next time we set up camp on a canoe trip,
I’ll offer to light the fire—but I’m willing to bet my daughter will already be gathering kindling and waiting to be the one to stoke the flames.

Every day, without a lot of effort, I discover an aspect of my home that was previously unknown to me; all it takes is a short walk or paddle into the pockets of wildness remaining in southern Ontario. It could be an ice formation that disappears come March, a wizened cedar tree that geminated before Champlain’s first voyage, or a strangely shaped Escarpment rock that weathers at a rate slow beyond human scope; nature continuously reinvents itself and offers up new perspectives. They’re available to anyone, even if they may seem small and not very “extreme.” Perhaps by communicating their beauty we can inspire others to look again at the irreplaceable bounty in our backyard.
