Looking back on 2020 we had the pleasure of speaking with many small and medium sized business owners and to see these resourceful entrepreneurs in the eye of adversity pushed forward, changed strategies, and learned to adjust to a new business normal as government placed restrictions to control the spread of the pandemic where put into effect.

We know that we still have many hurtles ahead of us as we move into 2021 given what we have seen in 2020 we are excited about the prospect of connecting, engaging and inspiring entrepreneurs and business leaders as we move into the new year and the opportunities that will be made available in the new year.

Now that we are midway into the last quarter of 2020, we have the U.S. election behind us and put our focus on getting  ready to take 2021 head on as some businesses and industries are still trying to survive while others thrive in these new business norms.

We continue to see more government restrictions added in some areas while lifting them in others as we continue to battle the second wave of the pandemic.  We are also making changes, as more and more of us are now looking for ways to get out of the house and explore their own regions when we would usually be making travel plans beyond our borders.

It is hard to believe that December is upon us already and it will soon be time to reflect on another year that has passed and the challenges that we faced personally and professionally in 2019.  We are honored to have had the opportunity to work with so many amazing entrepreneurs and business leaders and share their stories with our readers as we put the spotlight on the people that made it all happen in 2019.

This time of the year many businesses look to close out their year strong, while focusing on planning strategies and setting goals for next year and beyond as we all move into a new decade.  Like the year before, 2019 was an interesting year which saw many new challenges for businesses on both side of the boarder, and election north of the border and another starter for 2020 south of the border.  We like many of you, will learn from 2019 and look ahead to all the 2020 has to offer.

If you have never been to the annual Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show the best way to describe it would be to say that it is the Disneyland for people with gas in their veins.   The SEMA Show might not be open to the public but Diamondback Truck Covers surely is.  We revisited our conversation with Ethan Wendle president and CEO of Diamondback Truck Covers about the company’s 16-year journey from a collaboration between two students as part of a class assignment to develop and pitch a product to potential investments  to being a leader in the aftermarket truck accessory industry.   The owners of BC Diesel Truck Repair and Performance have deep roots in the North American diesel truck industry with close to forty years combined experience in the world of light-duty diesel trucks and specialize in diesel truck maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, diesel engine emissions, and driveline upgrades.  With Canada's 43rd general election now in full swing, we take a look at the leaders, the parties, their policies and the items that we will be hearing about during this years campaign trail in what looks to be a very tight race with Canadians heading to the polls on October 21st to cast their vote.  Regardless of your political position make sure that you get out and vote on or before October 21st, as we mentioned it is going to be a tight race as this is your time as an entrepreneur and business owner to have a voice in how your country will be run for the next four years.

Spring is here and for some of us it has been a long winter, and we are looking
forward to baseball and some barbeque, but most of all that snow melting away.

We are not sure if Clark Olson of Mago Hot Sauce was inspired by snow on
his travels, but we do know that when travelling he is fascinated by the many
different cultures and inspired by the food that they offer. Olson tells us how
the company has been steadily growing for almost three years now and how he
turned a passion into a full-fledged career and solid brand that you need to try
out this barbeque season or any season for that matter.

This time of the year many businesses look to close out their year strong, while focusing on planning strategies and setting goals for 2019 and beyond.  Like the year before, 2018 was an interesting year which saw many new challenges for businesses on both sides of the border.  We, like many of you, will learn from 2018 and look ahead to all that 2019 has to offer.

Entrepreneurs and business owners wear many hats on the day to day operations of their business.  They can be found out on the road looking for new clients or making follow up calls for their current clients, or they can be updating their social media and getting posts out to promote their products and services.  We do know that most, well at least successful ones, jump in when and where they are needed, and they understand that it is not a simple 9 to 5 job.  I always laugh when I remember telling my Dad back when I got my first job, that I would be working 40 hours a week and he looked at me with a smile on his face and said, “Good to see that you have a part time job so, what are you going to do with the other 128 hours in the week?” Don’t get me wrong he was very happy for me, but he was and still is a hard worker and has a strong work ethic that he has passed on to me for which I will always be thankful.  He also taught me to give back and help others not for the recognition but because it is the right thing to do and that has always stuck with me.

Entrepreneurs build businesses based on passion and drive.  For most, it is not where their careers began, but it was their passion to be an entrepreneur that led them to where they are today.  Like the old saying around the track goes, “It is not where you start, but where you finish that counts.” As with these businesses it looks like they are coming out of corner four in front of the pack and headed for the checker flag.

Business is more than just products and services, it is people working together to build something better. Whether it is a better province to live and work in, more economic growth for a region, a new kitchen or bathroom for your house or the latest new technology for your Jeep.

When we spoke with Brittany Davis, Marketing and Communications Specialist and Eric Virkler, Executive Director of the Lewis Economic Development Council we learned that while Lewis County is “Naturally” connected to its historic economic roots – it’s agricultural and resource- based abundance and productivity still does more than its share fueling the trade and industry supremacy of the Empire State. We also learned that Lewis County is also a progressively “green community” with wind, water, and solar projects reshaping the idea of local opportunity in a county of roughly 30,000 residents.

We hope all our readers, features and advertisers had time to enjoy the Canada Day and Independence Day holidays with friends and family. Many have told us that they use this time to reflect on the first part of the year, celebrate accomplishments and set new goals and targets for the remainder of 2018. I thought that was a great idea, so we wanted to look back at some of our great features from previous issues to move forward with more amazing stories about Business, Industry, Innovation and Health in the coming issues.

As we head into the first big long weekend of summer in Canada with July 1 st , and our U.S. friends to the south getting ready for July 4 th read our “Top 10 Destinations” to celebrate both of these amazing holidays. Check it out and see if your favorite place to watch the fireworks in July made our list.

Speaking of getting outdoors, we sit down with Red Paddle Co GM, Andrew Meakin and learn how a trend that first hit the waters of the UK in 2008 as “a bit of an idea,” has become a whole new segment of the market for outdoor sports and recreational equipment, plus it would be a great way to enjoy the fireworks out on the water.

This month things are heating up and we could not be happier about it. We are excited for our second annual “Top 10 Music Festival of Summer” list. This year we have some new events and some returning favorites from the editorial team for 2017. This is usually where we like to address the articles and advertisers that have been part of the issue, but in light of the recent tragedy involving the Humboldt Broncos hockey team we would like to send our thoughts and prayers out to the victims, their families and friends of this tragic accident who lost their lives and also send our wishes for a speedy recovery to those that survived.

We would like to spotlight the amazing efforts of the first responders who helped the victims of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in Saskatchewan on April 6 th and thank all those that have cared for and supported the team and their families during this time.
