Bangladesh is increasingly getting dependent on imported primary fuel and would have to meet 90 percent of its fuel demand at some point through imports. However, concerns about reliance on imports started deepening here due to high volatility in the global market due to a sudden rise in demand with the restart of economic activities across the world coupled with global energy politics. The skyrocketing prices started wreaking havoc in the third quarter of 2021. Bangladesh faced its first blow with the spot LNG price registering a new record, the crude oil prices hovering above US$80 per barrel. On top of this, the standoff between NATO and Russia over Ukraine, and Indonesia banning coal export has let off a fresh alarm bell for the fuel market burst. Amid this situation, local policymakers and energy sector experts were in confusion about taking the right kind of approach to ensure the energy security of Bangladesh. The policymakers think that the price is an issue, but ensuring sustainable supply of quality power and energy is the main challenge, which would not be possible to face without imported fuel. But energy experts and economists argue that Bangladesh needs an intelligent mix of fuel that would be inclusive of its own coal and gas.

This fuel mix should also include renewables and non-carbon power generation so that spending on fuel import can be mitigated to some extent.

Energy & Power (EP) is the first and only full-fledged fortnightly magazine that deals with the much cried over energy and power sector in Bangladesh. Since its inception in June 16, 2003, EP is working very hard to
a) Develop public consciousness on sustainable and even development of energy sector;
b) Assist the policy makers in assuming pragmatic policies for a balanced development of the energy sector;
c) Continuous supply of information among public; and
d) Develop a group of reporters in this field

Bangladesh is an energy deficit country like other countries in the region and most of the people do not have adequate access to the energy and power. The country is completely dependent on fossil energy source; at the same time, it is one of the most inefficient energy using countries in the world.
It lacks efficiency in planning, management, generation, distribution, load management and even at the end user level consumption.
In spite of the above drawbacks, issues relating to utilization of renewable energy, exploring alternative use of energy, planned use of environment friendly energy are significantly undermined in Bangladesh.
The biggest challenge of Bangladesh is to find a path for balanced growth of its energy sector. Despite its resource constraints, EP dynamically strives to provide theenergy sector with a flow of information and create public awareness; so that policymakers get guidelines and platforms for its sustainable development.

Code of Ethics
