The government has allocated a substantial amount of money for the power and energy sector in the budget for fiscal year 2021-22. State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid at a recent webinar, however, stated the allocation to have fallen short of the requirement for implementation of the plans in the sector. Experts, on the other hand, looked beyond the money, rather focused on the qualitative aspect of the budgeted expenditure. They found the budget lacks a much-needed clear roadmap for exploration and exploitation of our own hydrocarbon resources, forcing the country to become increasingly dependent on imported fuel from a volatile global market. There is also a concern that the budget failed to show any path for the country’s green development as desired by even the head of the government.

Whatever may be the allocation for the sector, it is expected that the government would spend more on exploration and exploitation of our own resources while strengthening efforts in increasing renewable energy contribution to the fuel mix and ensuring green and sustainable development of the country.

Bangladesh is an energy deficit country like other countries in the region and most of the people do not have adequate access to the energy and power. The country is completely dependent on fossil energy source; at the same time, it is one of the most inefficient energy using countries in the world. 
It lacks efficiency in planning, management, generation, distribution, load management and even at the end user level consumption. 
In spite of the above drawbacks, issues relating to utilization of renewable energy, exploring alternative use of energy, planned use of environment friendly energy are significantly undermined in Bangladesh. 
The biggest challenge of Bangladesh is to find a path for balanced growth of its energy sector. Despite its resource constraints, EP dynamically strives to provide theenergy sector with a flow of information and create public awareness; so that policymakers get guidelines and platforms for its sustainable development.
