In this issue

Bangladesh faces an impending gas crisis. Only eastern part explored up to 3,500-4000 meters depth. Prospects remain unknown in deeper horizon and in the western and southern regions. Vast offshore remains practically untouched. Confusion at policy level impeded crucial development of own coal reserves over the last few decades. Added to this, failure in the ’90s to approve Western Region Integrated Project (WRIP) in 2000 and Tri-Nation Pipeline has landed the country in hot water where scarcity of affordable primary energy resources will become a major headache in few years’ time. There were many hiccups in finalizing LNG contracts when global prices were lower. Without detail feasibility studies, precious years have been wasted to commission several FSRUs and some technically impossible infrastructure before being abandoned. All the while, over ambitious target setting for Bapex failed to deliver on 108 wells because of discripancies in national procurement policy and storage facilities. It is high time that management of national energy and power companies be reorganized with line professionals to effect quality upgrade of operations. Non-technical people must not be involved in planning, operation and management of gas sector.
