Bangladesh is now thinking afresh about its energy sector, particularly due to the emerging situation owing to the COVID-19 pandemic impact that spread across different sectors of the economy. A dilemma has already been created whether the country should go for LNG-based power generation instead of the coal-based ones those remained at the planning stage yet. A local think even suggested going for renewable energy to replace the coal-based capacity. However, the time is almost up to review the Power System Master Plan (PSMP). It is scheduled to be reviewed in 2021. In doing so, the generation plan, demand projection and fuel mix must be reviewed after having in-depth analysis on the sector and overall economy in the New Normal World after the pandemic. However, going exclusively on LNG, considering coal as dirty fuel, may lead Bangladesh again to tricky mono-fuel dependent country. Adding own primary fuel like gas and coal in the fuel mix would facilitate achieving a longer term energy security.
