Flooding, tidal surges, storms, tornados and cyclones are regular phenomenon in Bangladesh. And these natural disasters often cause huge damage to our power distribution systems. The rural areas and the coastal zones are the most affected areas. The latest disaster was cyclone Amphan which hit Bangladesh on May 20 and razed through our coasts and then some northern districts. The entire power distribution system suffered considerable damage in the cyclone. It is true that it is not possible to make the power distribution system completely disaster-proof. What is more important is that we should strengthen our response to such disasters. This time the response time for system repair and restoration of power has been much quicker than before. Power division and distribution utilities claimed that their advance preparation assisted them in achieving that. Experts point out that no country of the world can fully protect the power systems from natural calamities. But the remedy is to respond as quickly as possible. Another vital issue is automation. Initiative for automation should be taken upon assessment of the entire system. That will assist restoration of power supply much quicker after every disaster.
