The market of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) grew fast over the last 10 years in Bangladesh. The demand for the petroleum product went up rapidly, mostly for cooking purpose. Investment in the comparatively nascent sector also witnessed phenomenal growth during the period to develop a capacity of supplying 6 million tonnes, which is much higher than the present annual demand of 1.0 million tonnes. The saturated market as a consequence of over investment has created an unhealthy competition among the operators, running many new investors into high risk of becoming sick. The unhealthy market competition may also affect the overall safety of using the LPG. The government should work out ways of addressing the sorry state of the sector through discussions with all the operators and stakeholders concerned.
