In this issue

Energy is the driving force of economy. If Bangladesh wants to be a middle income country in the near future, it must ensure economic development. Ensuring primary energy is one of the key preconditions for this. But experts say effective measures are absent to explore our own gas resources. At the same time, exploration of coal is hanging in the balance due to failure to take right decisions in the right time. The present government must be given the credit for its achievements in power generation but it has not yet taken required steps to develop the country’s gas sector, specially for ensuring primary energy. Alleged mismanagement and lack of coordination are behind the failure, experts say. The country may fall into severe energy crisis if massive exploration for oil and gas as well as coal production doesn’t get headway immediately. The experts urge the major political parties to pinpoint the issues in their election manifestoes for the forthcoming general elections, so that the government could overcome the failures and take pragmatic steps to ensure primary energy.
