Editorial Priority in the power sector over the first five years of the nine years of the Awami League-led alliance government was increasing power generation. The trend continued over the next four years as well. It led to achieving generation capacity of 13,800 MW. But due to gas supply crisis, highest generation achieved so far remains at 9,507 MW. Policymakers are optimistic that by end 2018, the entire country can be brought under coverage of power system. But the government could not achieve any notable success for arranging sustainable supply of primary fuel over this period. The reliance on liquid fuel have increased. And despite all efforts, power system could not be made trouble-free. So managing the power system in the upcoming summer is a big challenge for the government in the election year. Though the transmission grid improved a lot, there are issues in isolation. The distribution networks have vastly improved, but transmission system constraints cannot ensure un-interrupted supply everywhere. That is why the power system still suffers. Power interruptions could not be done away with. We hope the system would be better managed than last years.
