It is now about six months since the oil price went below US$50 per barrel. But there was no initiative to reduce the price in the domestic market. Many think the government is trying to make more profit from the oil trade by delaying the price adjustment. There is a demand that the price should be adjusted in the domestic market before the next week-end. Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation has made a profit of Tk 10,000 crore during the last one and half years since when the price of fuel oil nosedived. Recently, a proposal to cut fuel oil price has been sent to the Ministry of Finance though it runs counter to the government’s intention to continue with making profit, taking advantage of the falling price in the international market. The intention reflected well as a symbolic price cut was learnt to have proposed - only Tk 5 per liter of octane, petrol, diesel, kerosene and furnace. Though it becomes overdue long before, the price would be reduced subject to the approval by the Ministry of Finance. Now the question is -- will the ministry really take a positive step?

Bangladesh is an energy deficit country like other countries in the region and most of the people do not have adequate access to the energy and power. The country is completely dependent on fossil energy source; at the same time, it is one of the most inefficient energy using countries in the world.

It lacks efficiency in planning, management, generation, distribution, load management and even at the end user level consumption.

In spite of the above drawbacks, issues relating to utilization of renewable energy, exploring alternative use of energy, planned use of environment friendly energy are significantly undermined in Bangladesh.

The biggest challenge of Bangladesh is to find a path for balanced growth of its energy sector. Despite its resource constraints, EP dynamically strives to provide theenergy sector with a flow of information and create public awareness; so that policymakers get guidelines and platforms for its sustainable development.
