The country's dependency on imported fuel has become an issue of concern as studies suggest Bangladesh's power sector would become 92 percent import dependent if we fail to utilize our coal resources. Another concern is the gradual depletion of natural gas reserves. State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources recently told parliament that the 15 TCF of proven recoverable gas reserve would be completely depleted by 2031 if no major new reserve discovered.

On the other hand, despite failure in even finalizing 500 MMCFD LNG import initiative over the last three years, Energy Ministry has taken fresh initiative of importing 2500-3000 MMCFD-equivalent LNG by 2030. This is an appreciable initiative considering our emerging needs, besides the possibility of finding new gas resource. But our concern is whether it is at all feasible to achieve the target. Experts say Bangladesh might have to embrace a crisis in meeting the financial obligations from mega initiative of LNG import if the domestic gas price is not made market-based and free of subsidy simultaneously. We hope the government would take the issue seriously and take right steps.

Bangladesh is an energy deficit country like other countries in the region and most of the people do not have adequate access to the energy and power. The country is completely dependent on fossil energy source; at the same time, it is one of the most inefficient energy using countries in the world.

It lacks efficiency in planning, management, generation, distribution, load management and even at the end user level consumption.

In spite of the above drawbacks, issues relating to utilization of renewable energy, exploring alternative use of energy, planned use of environment friendly energy are significantly undermined in Bangladesh.

The biggest challenge of Bangladesh is to find a path for balanced growth of its energy sector. Despite its resource constraints, EP dynamically strives to provide theenergy sector with a flow of information and create public awareness; so that policymakers get guidelines and platforms for its sustainable development.
