In this issue, we’ve traversed Australia from coast to coast in search of some fabulous stories about rural and regional people and their lifestyles and businesses. We start with a handsome homestead in tranquil Toodyay in WA’s Avon Valley and end up on the other side of the country in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast hinterland where ceramicist Mel Lumb has a gorgeous home and studio. We head to the country music capital of Tamworth, NSW, where artist Carina Chambers celebrates a different dimension of country life with her works inspired by a childhood spent on a farm surrounded by a menagerie of animals. A bit further up the New England highway we visit Tina and Tom Skipper, custodians of land at Guyra that has belonged to their family since 1838. Then we track south to Tasmania’s Huon Valley, where The Australian/Vogel’s literary award-winning novelist K. M. (Kate) Kruimink lives with her family on a farm. If the past few months have taught us anything, it’s about the value of being more self-reliant, so our service feature looks to the garden and the many tools and services that are available to help us grow our own food and flowers. We’ve travel, shopping and design inspiration in all our regular features.

In this issue we welcome the new year with a fresh assortment of features from all over rural and regional Australia. In South Australia, we visit artist Dzint Jurevicius and his wife, Ruth, who have a home and gallery on Hindmarsh Island at the mouth of the Murray River, and we also explore the historic Yallum Park at Penola, in the Coonawarra wine district. In Queensland, we catch up with Mel Manley, one of the driving forces behind the Forget Me Not Foundation, which works to stop child trafficking into orphanages for financial gain, mainly in Nepal, India and Uganda. Her home and its splendid garden in the Sunshine Coast hinterland is a tranquil shelter from these difficult times. In NSW, we venture to Dennarque Estate, one of the foundation properties at Mount Wilson in the Blue Mountains. Its splendid gardens were designed by Charles Moore, who was the director of Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden for 48 years. We also head to the central-west, where Wendy and Kim Muffet have built an eco-friendly home and retreat on their 50-acre (20-hectare) organic farm. Our travel story focuses on the Parkes and Forbes region, while our service feature looks to the sanctuary that is the bathroom and all the fittings, fixtures and accessories that make it a haven for relaxation. We’ve design and decorating inspiration as well as a good measure of down-to-earth country wisdom in every story.

We detour to the south coast where Christina Kennedy has devoted 20 years to creating a sensational native garden on Horse Island then travel to South Australia where Tania and Keith Norman seem to be living the dream with a home at Encounter Bay and houseboat Alexia on the Murray River. In Queensland we visit Doug Beattie at his historic home, Winnathoola in Roma and we profile the Mason family, who have created the landmark Smitten Merino label in Tasmania. Our fashion story looks to the coming cooler months with a session at the Hillbilly cider shed, the service feature heads to the heart of the home, the kitchen and reveals the latest news in appliances, fixtures and fittings. Our travel section kicks off a series about regions affected by the bushfires with a trip up the Bells Line of Road to Bilpin. Plus there’s lots of other decorating and lifestyle inspiration on every page.

This issue embraces the wonderful diversity of the Australian countryside with stories from the coast to the outback. We start in Victoria, where we visit Lee and Daryl Elliott in their charmingly restored cottage in Horsham. Then we head to East Gippsland where interior designer Katie Riddell and her husband, Hamish and daughter Sophie have created a pint-sized weekender in a spectacular hilltop location. In south-west Queensland we visit Roma and artist Sandra Allen at her home and studio on the family farm and meet Doug Beattie, who is slowly restoring the grand old dame of a Queenslander that is Winnathoola. Further north we detoured from Springsure to Kolane station, where Angela and Andrew Schwarz have restored their homestead. Even further west near Barcaldine we catch up with the Doneleys on historic Dunraven station, which has been in their family for 110 years. Our service feature looks at bathrooms and there’s lots of other decorating and lifestyle inspiration on every page.

When I say take over, I mean more like a military invasion, as we infi ltrated
the entire premises from the distillery fl oor to the cocktail bar with our cameras,
lights and all the paraphernalia that goes on behind the scenes to create a fashion
story. Founders David Whittaker and Vanessa Wilton stood by benignly as we
blitzkrieged their offi ces with suitcases full of garments and bags of accessories,
while our hair and make-up team rolled out their arsenal of heated rollers, brushes
and make-up and requisitioned any spare desks as workspace. While head distiller
Tim Stones made sure everything was shipshape on the factory fl oor, T2 (Tim
Gray) was at the ready mixing cocktails as the story shifted from the workplace
to party time. If explanation were needed for why the Manly Spirits team were so
happy to help us realise our Spirited Conversation story it would go something like
this: David and Vanessa know what it is to dream big. Three years ago, they came
up with the notion of starting their own distillery that would blend the carefree
beach life and urban sophistication for which Manly is famed with genuinely
artisanal methods to capture nature in a bottle. They enlisted the support of chef
and forager Elijah Holland to sustainably source local marine botanicals to give
their gins, whiskies and vodkas a truly coastal Australian fl avour. And once they
had perfected their product, they opened a bar, which you can visit on weekends.
So a big shout out to everyone at Manly Spirits. Thanks for making us so welcome

For the next issue of Australian Country we’ve travelled the length and breadth of this amazing country and met some fabulous folk. Our travels started in Victoria where we met Alicia and Ian Cooknell at their home high on a hill on Melbourne’s northern periphery. Over in the West we caught up with globe-trotting creatives Paul and Bonnie Atlan who have brought a fresh palette to their historic home in outer Perth, while in the NSW Riverina Kate Pitt and Rex Watson have spent more than a decade breathing new life into their historic Moira station homestead and outbuildings. In Queensland we visited Riza and Cam Riza who combined a country aesthetic and travel souvenirs in the revamp of their Queenslander and we also caught up with the very talented and hospitable Peart family on their Sunnyholt station in the Arcadia Valley. Our travel story takes us to Hollywood in the outback and the tiny town of Winton, which hosts the annual Vision Splendid film festival, there’s garden and decorating inspiration aplenty and a bird’s eye view of some spectacular landscapes in an essay by photographer Nick Rains. So be sure to join us for Australian Country 21.1, which goes on sale January 4.

In this issue we meet bush businesswomen Kara Lauder, who runs her western boot business from Paraburdoo in WA’s Pilbara, and Julie Brown from Ilfracombe in central-western Queensland, who started a sun-safe swimwear label as a means of surviving the drought. Not far away (in country miles) at historic Nogo station near Longreach, the Kinnon family has added hospitality to their business portfolio, which began with coach rides in town as a means of supplementing their farm income. We also feature the extraordinary field of poppies which pops up every year in time for Remembrance Day and, as a nod to the fast approaching festive season, we present our annual Christmas gift guide. Our travels to Norfolk Island uncovered Forrester Court, an extraordinary clifftop of Brad and Ariane Forrester and one of the most spectacular locations in the world in which to enjoy high tea. The weather is cooling down, so our fashion feature focuses on winter looks in the historic outback setting of the Qantas Founders’ Museum at Longreach. Our travel story heads to Tasmania and Bruny Island while we visit northern NSW to catch up with Kate Noller, who manages to combine earning a living with her passion for horses. Our service features cover heating and accessories for the bedroom and there’s lots of other design inspiration on every page.

For the next issue of Australian Country we’ve been out and about searching out some great stories to keep you all in touch with rural and regional Australia. From historic Perricoota station on the banks of the Murray River near Moama to the former worker’s cottage a Queensland collector has turned into a stunning showpiece, we’re delving into grand Australian traditions and the families who maintain them. Bebeah garden at Mount Wilson is another landmark, where 130-year-old specimen trees have provided a spectacular outline for master designer Miguel Alvarez to colour in and we’ve a producer profile from Norfolk Island where the landscape is as rich as the legacy of the convict and colonial past. Our travel story heads to Tasmania where we joined a select band of night owls committed to capturing images of the extraordinary phenomenon that is the Aurora Australis and we came back from Hobart on a Princess Cruises ship that doubled duty as a floating picture palace for a mini version of the Sydney Film Festival. For the next issue of Australian Country we’ve been on the road again, starting in Queensland where we visit a family in their hilltop hideaway in the Bunya Mountains and another in their gorgeous Queenslander in the historic heart of Ipswich. We’ve a divine take on vintage from Victoria, a quick trip across Bass Strait to visit the Burbury family at their historic Bowsden homestead in Tasmania and a big detour to WA to catch up with wine industry veteran David Hohnen, who these days farms pigs and makes smallgoods. Our fashion story looks to the garden for inspiration and we take the road less travelled in a story about the Backroads Trail along the NSW side of the Murray River from Echuca-Moama. Our recipe feature focuses on the delights of plums, we have more seasonal treats from the Fox Hill Farm cooking school in the NSW Southern Highlands and our service feature focuses on accessories and accoutrements for entertaining. For the next issue of Australian Country we’ve been on the road again, starting in Western Australia where we visited the wonderful chateau nestled in the vines at Fraser Gallop Estate and an amazing sensory garden created by winemaker Cathy Howard at Whicher Ridge. We also detoured to a character-laden house in the Adelaide Hills, a gorgeous fruit farm in the hinterland of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast and the Toowoomba home of antique dealers Brenton and Sharon Kinnear. Our producer profile comes from north-eastern Victoria where the dairy farming Crooke family has diversified into splendid bespoke ice-cream manufacture. Still in the kitchen, our recipe feature focuses on tomatoes. We’ve an amazing photo essay on an outback Queensland wedding and our travel takes us to Andalucia in southern Spain, the home of tapas, fiestas and splendid Moorish architecture. Then we head over to Western Australia with a celebration of one of the seaaon’s great delights, the annual wildflower display. While we were over there, we headed to the Wheatbelt, where three enterprising farmers are making a name for themselves as quinoa growers. We also have fashion for a weekend in the country, plus recipes using pawpaw and our service feature looks at the many ways to spruce up the bathroom. While we were in London recently we visited Aussie-born-and-bred Ric Glenn in his domain, the gardens of the Cadogan Estate and gained exclusive access to some of the key gardens of Chelsea and Knightsbridge. Our home-grown garden story is about the beautiful space Dominic Wong has created at his Chinoiserie home in the NSW Southern Highlands. The travel story focuses on the Heathcote region of Victoria and our service feature highlights must-have accessories for the garden and outdoor entertaining areas.

For the next issue of Australian Country, we’ve again travelled the highways and byways in search of some great stories. In Queensland we visited a gorgeous historic homestead and from Mildura in Victoria we ventured out of town to the other worldly Murray River salt mine. We visited the home of Hugh and Gendy Parry-Okeden on Sydney’s northern outskirts, while in Tasmania we caught up with Launceston restaurateur Karen Burbury for the food files feature and in South Australia a wonderful stone home in the Adelaide Hills. We rug up for our fashion pages with a girls’ night in and the service feature focuses on the haven that is the bedroom. Our recipes celebrate new ways of cooking with eggplant and the garden story comes from Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula with the ambitious and sprawling Panorama Garden Estate. Our travel story heads to England where we’ve visited the places Shakespeare knew and loved. So join us for the next issue of Australian Country.

We’ve again travelled the highways and byways in search of the most captivating stories for your reading pleasure. We headed to Mildura on the mighty Murray where we visited style guru Sue Clohesy, who has transformed a 1930s farmhouse with a wonderful amalgam of vintage wares and contemporary art pieces. We were also lucky to attend a packing shed lunch showcasing the new varieties of table grapes that are emerging on the greengrocers’ shelves. In Queensland, we joined horse-loving Kate Johns and her family as they relaxed on their Sunshine Coast hinterland property. In Victoria, we caught up with fashion designer Tiffany Treloar and her food writer and photographer husband, Richard Cornish to learn how their lives and careers have so serendipitously blended. We visited Yengo sculpture garden and Parma wallaby wildlife sanctuary at Mt Wilson in the NSW Blue Mountains, looked at the latest and greatest kitchen gadgets and accessories and took a step back to colonial Tasmania by visiting Brickendon, the farm village at Longford that has been in the Archer family for seven generations.

For Australian Country 19.4 we travelled to Tasmania where we had unprecedented access to the World Heritage-listed Woolmers homestead and National Rose Garden. In NSW, we compiled our Food Files feature with assistance from Cornersmith Café and Picklery co-owner Alex Elliott-Howery, visited Garry & Linda McDouall and toured their home and edible garden on the banks of the Gwydir River at Bingara, and our fashion feature celebrated the apple harvest at Bilpin in the lower Blue Mountains. In the Victorian Goldfields we met David Glenn, creator of the amazingly bountiful dry climate garden, Lambley, and his wife and soul mate, botanic artist Criss Canning.
