The JanFeb 2018 issue of Selector is themed our ‘Best of’ issue, where we get to reflect on the highlights of the past year. The key feature is the 50 Best Wines of 2017 as tasted by the Wine Selectors Tasting Panel. The Panel tasted and rated over 4000 wines in 2017, so to make the 50 Best list is an achievement in itself – see who came out on top!

We often hear the Italian term la dolce vita. But what does it actually mean? While it literally translates to 'the sweet life', we often interpret it as 'the good life'. What is the good life for you? Of course, in the glorious world that we inhabit, that of culinary and vinous pleasures, scored highly on the 'good life' scale, but for many, like cover star Guy Grossi, food +wine is simply the adjunct to the greatest pleasures in his life. For one of the world's most awarded chefs, Massimo Bottura, food not only gives pleasure, but is also a vehicle that can drive social change. Maggie Beer looks at prolonging the good life in her latest work with medical expert Professor Ralph Martins as they examine the effect wholesome food can have on warding off dementia. Of course, with such a strong Italian focus, we had to feature some delicious Italian recipes: Melbourne's Johnny Di Francesco gives us a taste of Naples, while Lyndey Milan serves up Puglia on a plate. In wine, we ask our Members to give us their thoughts on contemporary Chardonnay, enjoy a dream vertical with the De Bortoli family in the Yarra Valley and celebrate 50 fabulous years of the Margaret River wine region.
