If you’re looking for ideas for where to go and what to do, we have lots of them in this issue. Our feature story about 13 epic Aussie adventures, from Kangaroo Island to Kakadu; and the Great Barrier Reef to Ningaloo Reef, is a must-read. I also loved running a story by award-winning travel writer, Rachel Lees, about her first trip with a baby in tow (hint: it’s very different!), and Ben Groundwater’s take on holidays around the country that dads will love. Dinosaurs are a favourite in our household, and I’m sure we will be following Bev Malzard’s guide to the best experiences Down Under at some point in the next few years. With New Zealand still the most likely international destination we’ll be heading, we also have a story about the best things to do on the North Island – kayaking to see Maori rock carvings at Mine Bay looks particularly cool. For those planning further ahead, the expert’s guide to Disneyland, by specialist travel agent Rebecca Mason, is sure to get you pumped about a trip to see Mickey and Co, with lots of awesome tips.

Here at Out & About with Kids, we plan to continue to bring you great stories as we ride out the pandemic. And you will find plenty in this issue. Given recent events, our story about the best things to do with kids in Aussie cities seems even more fitting than when we’d planned it, as staycations are still the safest travel option. We are also extremely excited to introduce our new dad writer, Ben Groundwater, this issue. Ben is a multi-award-winning travel writer and host of the fantastic Flight of Fancy podcast, which is my go-to when my son is sleeping during road trips. His story about his first getaway as a family of four in Victoria’s High Country literally made me LOL. We were also super excited to recruit LA-based Aussie chef Curtis Stone as our celebrity interview for this issue. What a top bloke! It’s also great to give Kangaroo Island a bit of post-bushfire love with Meg Law’s story (and amazing pic!) this issue, and a deep dive interview of the experts about engaging children in outdoor play.

We bring you great ideas for a family break in our stories about Kiama, Central NSW Gold Coast theme parks, the Sunshine Coast, Cairns and Uluru. Now is a good time to nab a bargain at a CBD hotel. So why not consider a staycation? There are some fun offerings for families, from indoor glamping to pyjama parties. Whale watching season is also nearly upon us, so we’ve highlighted some of the top experiences you can have with the gentle giants around Australia. Also a story about taking a toddler to Perisher in NSW, the guide to NZ resorts in our New Zealand story, and things you can do in Hoshino Resorts TOMAMU with AND without kids. And for something that makes us feel a bit warm and fuzzy, we were forced to expand our sustainability news section in this issue because there were just so many incredible things going on in that space. We really believe in giving tourism operators credit where it’s due, and hope our readers will also support them for doing their bit to help make the planet a better place.

Our cover story about the 101 best family travel experiences in Australia for 2021, we have given you a tonne of ideas for your next local getaway. They range from super kid-friendly holiday parks and resorts to theme parks and attractions, tropical islands, road trips, eco-adventures, national parks, museums, festivals and authentic Indigenous tours. We hope you are as blown away as we were by how many wonderful things there are to do in this great land of ours, and we think it will be a great resource, especially for those planning gap years. We had also been talking for some time about doing a story on the benefits of travelling with children (like we need a reason!), and thought the first issue of a new year was the perfect time to consult the experts. With a background in social work, this is a particular passion and driving force for our publisher, Elisa Elwin.
