I’ve been lucky to call Dubai home for 13 years now and despite myriad weekends away exploring intriguing corners of the Emirates, I know I’ve barely scratched the surface of what the beautiful United Arab Emirates has to offer. With many still shying away from long-haul holidays, we bring you some of our favourite staycations across the UAE, hopefully helping you to find your perfect destination without the need to pack your passport. The best bit is, we can support local businesses as we go about our mini-breaks, which gives a getaway a sense of goodness too. 

A palpable shift has occurred within travel, where people are looking more intimately at the reasons they need to travel, where they are choosing to go and how. While the holiday season means different things to different people, the desire to do something different and special with the people we love is pretty universal. So as we beckon in Christmas festivities and ring in the end of 2020, we unearth some amazing ways to make new memories.
 
Sarah Freeman embarks on a snow train ride through Switzerland on The Glacier Express, soaking up the wintery sights of Zermatt and St. Moritz. A trip based around food, culture and countryside, it is quintessential festive fodder.
 
Somewhere you won’t require quite so many layers is the Maldives, and I venture to Constance Halaveli to discover peace of mind in paradise. As days flit between snorkeling with sharks, siestas in a hammock and savouring the world’s best sunset from an infinity pool, it’s easy to find one’s inner equilibrium.
 
Closer to home, there are some beautiful festive staycations and experiences that will inject the rest of 2020 with some much-needed magic.

Having lived in Dubai for the past 13 years, the notion of escaping on an all-important winter-sun holiday had, well, sort of escaped me. But before moving here, when I’d grown long-accustomed to the arctic climes of a UK winter, I’d stare longingly through travel agent windows as they advertised sun-kissed vacations in temperatures and destinations I could only dream of. Then, when I moved to Dubai, where winter weather rarely dips below 20 degrees during the day, there was far less call to seek sunshine elsewhere.

 

However, then along came Covid-19, playing havoc with my travel plans and, like so many of us, banishing me indoors for several months. But with borders opening and travel back on the cards, I have an itch to just get up and go – go anywhere, somewhere sunny, somewhere exotic, somewhere I can literally taste the adventure. I want to reawaken my travel senses and nurture my curious soul.

 

And so, this month, we’ve scratched beneath the surface to bring you warm winter wanderlust that goes beyond the beach, taking you somewhere a little less ordinary, where safety and a spirit of adventure live in harmony. From Madagascar to Costa Rica and Marrakech, let these places spark something new in you.

We’ve been waiting oh-so patiently for news that borders are relaxing their restrictions in the Indian Ocean, and with the Seychelles and Mauritius joining the Maldives in welcoming back tourists, this issue is dedicated to 13 beautiful resorts turning our travel dreams into reality. You can hire your own private island in the Seychelles, sleep in an underwater suite in the Maldives, or claim ownership of an entire estate in Mauritius… Whatever your whim, the Indian Ocean is your oyster once more.

Before having a child of my own, the importance of a good kids club or family-friendly activities was lost on me. But now, with a mini globetrotter in tow, I realise how vital is for hotels to not only cater to all ages but go above and beyond to take the stress out of travelling en masse. As summer travel plans are underway, we curate a list of some of the world’s best family-focused hotels – those with awesome kids clubs, the ones putting the entertainment into edutainment and those really upping the ante in making a family holiday effortless and memorable.

My fascination with Africa started aged 19, when I began a round-the-world trip from Cape Town, spending eight weeks winding my way up the Garden Route and on to Zimbabwe. I saw ‘real’ wildlife for the first time, lost myself in Africa’s kaleidoscopic culture and fell in love with the kindness of its people. Since then, I have tracked a pride of lions from a hot air balloon in Kenya, jumped off Victoria Falls attached to a cord, seen chimpanzees up-close in Rwanda. There are, of course, many more countries, corners and cultures to explore, which is why I chose an ‘Africa’ theme for our July issue. The continent stole my heart a long time ago and, embarking on one of the awe-inspiring adventures we’ve outlined in our Out of Africa feature, I’m pretty sure it will steal yours, too.

 

From Africa to Indonesia, and we enjoy some rustic luxury at two private island resorts in Indonesia’s relatively unknown Riau Archipelago, and curate some of the best private islands, from Sri Lanka to St. Barths, to let you socially distance consciously, yet in style.

With Covid-19 playing havoc with the world, the travel industry is in a constant state of change. It’s a difficult time for the travel industry at present, with the rapidly-changing impact of Coronavirus COVID-19. As country’s work to contain it with varying flight reductions and travel restrictions, we too must be vigilant about where, when and how we travel. It is an unprecedented and fluctuating situation we all must pay close attention to, whilst not letting it diminish our dreams and longing for travel as a whole.

We’re keeping close to home this edition with some indulgent Arabian escapes. Erstwhile editor Steven Bond went in search of a life less ordinary at Sofitel Dubai The Palm (page 62) where French-Polynesian style and new palatial residences left him longing for more. 

Since we were in the neighbourhood, we also popped in to visit Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort (page 98), where Melanie Swan discovered a slice of Thai life in the heart of the Middle East.

Elsewhere in Dubai, Matthew McQueen dusted off his ski boots at Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates (page 70) swapping 40°C temperatures for cosy views of Ski Dubai; and down the road in the UAE capital, Danae Mercer spent a languid weekend winding down at The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal (page 106).

We also took a tour of three Arabian cities and one South African destination in search for local flavour with Radisson (page78), spent 24 hours in Hollywood with Christian Sylt (page 128) and set sail for far flung lands in search of the world’s most picturesque island escapes (page 88).

IT’S A HEATED OFFICE DEBATE... WOULD YOU PREFER TO ENCOUNTER THE BIG FIVE OR THE BIG FOUR? Most of us are familiar with the African safari concept: attempting to sight a lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and the increasingly elusive rhino – surely a life-changing experience. The latter, however, is a phrase we’ve coined to represent the quartet of Indian Ocean destinations (page 52).

WHEN I ARRIVED IN THE UAE I WAS IN AWE OF THE FACT THERE WASN’T SIMPLY ONE ‘HEART OF DUBAI’ – a focal point that represented the sole nucleus of the city. Instead I discovered a range of exciting and varied destinations to flit between, and really didn’t know where I should start exploring. Yes, I’m making a parallel with this, our bumper April issue. 

Each and every year we pull out the stops to deliver a special edition for the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) in Dubai, the region’s leading, international travel and tourism event, with which we are a proud partner. IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE EVER DOING A “BEST OF” LIST FOR THE INDIAN OCEAN.

It’s too vast, too varied and too replete with ﬁve-star resorts ﬁt for the trip of a lifetime. What we present in this issue is an all-star cast of Indian Ocean getaways (page 50) that offer something special for your next great escape; from colonial cliff-side hotels on Sri Lanka’s south coast, to diminutive islands in the Seychelles, dotted with lavish villas.

Our other 10-page inclusion is a little closer to home – 48 hours in DIFC (page 90). We explored Dubai’s own ode to Manhattan and Canary Wharf from the luxurious vantage point of The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai International Financial Centre, with a little help from a Rolls-Royce Ghost. Dubai may lack a traditional town square, but at its heart there’s a dizzying array of world-class entertainment and lavish thrills.

We all have very different opinions on the importance of Valentine’s Day but it’s one of the most unavoidable dates on the zeitgeist. That’s why we’ve included 12 pages of Romantic Escapes (page 46) where we catalogue some amorous opportunities far and wide. From hideaways in Hawaii to a classic stay in Rome, there should be plenty of travel inspiration for all manner of well-heeled couples. Elsewhere, one of our regular contributors ventured to Vienna (page 58) for colder climes and plenty of culture. Most of our romantic itineraries tend to be targeted at tropical resorts but Sarah Freeman discovered artisanal retail and five-star havens in the Austrian capital. And for those seeking a little more adventure, we also look at what Tanzania’s Ruaha National Park has to offer (page 66) – and it was truly wild in the best possible way.

The month of January is all about new beginnings and (as cliché as it is) we wanted to highlight a comprehensive range of wellness escapes (page 62) and opportunities, both in Dubai and overseas. From expert workshops to decedent hammams, there should be enough suggestions to start 2019 right. There’s also a strong wellbeing slant to our cover story, which involved a visit to the newly opened Joali Maldives (page 42). I had the pleasure of arriving at the box fresh atoll hideaway just before Christmas and made the most of the resort’s incredible facilities.

Our other features are spread far and wide, ranging from the really wild Royal Livingstone Victoria Falls Zambia Hotel by Anantara in Zambia (page 50), where I discovered one of the natural world’s true marvels, to a stunning pair of Accor hotels in Makati, Manila’s glitzy business and entertainment district (page 58).  In terms of pure luxury, however, nothing in this issue has the historic and aesthetic appeal of the Fabergé Suite at Belmond Grand Hotel Europe in Saint Petersburg (page 54).

Despite living in Dubai for seven years, the idea of a “winter wonderland” still conjures images of snowfall and twinkling Christmas lights. And of course this month’s cover story is the Address Montgomerie (page 62), where I had the good fortune of spending a staycation weekend away from the buzz of the city. I would say that I was able to work on my swing, but ended up blessing the groundskeeper with some overtime. It’s a hotel par excellence (pun intended), and Emaar has done a sterling job of refreshing the rooms and public spaces.

I’ve been to London a dozen times over the years and it just isn’t quite like anywhere else in Britain. My first visit to America (shorthand for the USA but also the pair of continents) was tantamount to entering another dimension; one that I’d seen on TV and at the cinema, where they speak the same language, yet somehow it’s all a bit different.

After penning a love letter to the star-spangled States in our April supplement we found time for another visit, uncovering some Great American Escapes (page 65), with a special XL feature large enough to warrant its own internal cover.

The mode of transport was a little different for our intrepid editor at large, Joe Mortimer, who trundled across England’s green pastures only to arrive in the Big Smoke, where he discovered the city’s loftiest vantage point at Shangri-La Hotel At The Shard London (page 46).

And our features section continues with a visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the coastal city of Jeddah (page 86) with a visit to a pair of high-end hotels; Sofitel Jeddah Corniche and Frontel Jeddah (page 88) ideal for Saudi staycations and bleisure breaks.

The world is well and truly on your doorstep in the UAE. With world-class airlines and close proximity to an incredible range of destinations, we’re spoilt for choice – but there’s so much to enjoy at home.

We have two incredible UAE hotels in our features section this month, starting with our cover story, a sumptuous stay at Address Downtown (page 48), one of Dubai’s best known luxury hotels and the brand’s flagship property, which recently reopened in triumphant style.

Just a little over an hour down the super highway, we also arrived at one of the UAE capital’s most immaculate five-star stays. The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal (page 56) turned out to be our shot of espresso, where we soothed our souls in the same neighbourhood as Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

There’s also a range of other options in the UAE and Oman within our regular Arabian Journeys section (page 78), which spans three pages in this edition, but we do venture further afield with two “featurettes” in Prague and Bogota

Before going on my first African safari I’d heard of the coveted “Big Five” – a range of incredible specimens to admire from afar. When it comes to luxury travel in the Indian Ocean, it’s all about the “Big Four”, a quartet of iconic destinations that every holidaymaker should experience at least once in their lives. This month’s cover story (page 56) covers some of the top resorts in all four countries, ranging from isolated private islands to a luxury tented camp in Sri Lanka – neatly tipping the hat to our tenuous safari analogy. Our other features are a tad less island-focused, with regular contributor Sarah Freeman taking a look at some of the artsy goings on in Zurich (page 40), one of our most beloved European destinations. Elsewhere in Europe, Sweden actually does boast a dizzying range of archipelago with a total of 221,831 islands – yes it’s true, Wikipedia tells me so – but our focus is on Stockholm (page 48), where writer Joe Lipscombe experiences a midsummer monsoon and quips on the quirkier elements of the Scandinavian capital. Welcome to the latest incarnation of our ‘Cities’ edition.

For this issue, we focus on a few other far-flung destinations, including the emirate’s East Asian cousin, Singapore. It’s not the well-worn consumer themes that interested our editor-at-large for this issue, with Joe Mortimer exploring art and architecture in his four-page ‘featurette’ on page 50.

Adding some starling contrast to Singapore, Salalah is our alternative inclusion, bringing something entirely different into the fold. My own Salalah sojourn was a return to the fabulous Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara (page 42), which captures the essence of Arabia and provides a vantage point to explore the area.

Elsewhere in the issue, we commiserate ‘ze Germans’ and their recent World Cup efforts by extoling the virtues of the latest BMW M4 convertible (page 78) and fine dine at Bangkok’s Nahm, one of the most exceptional restaurants in the whole of Asia (page 62).
