Mercedes-AMG EOS 53 4MATIC+ The Future Is Here

The first all-electric Mercedes, with a radical new design and a long list of tech inside, is unlike other Mercs. Still, this sleek, low slung sedan is definitely a piece of the future

IT WAS 2019 when Mercedes Benz gave us a glimpse into its electrification strategy with the EQC SUV. While it was interesting, it was far from exciting as, in a nutshell, it was a fuel-burning GLC SUV that was converted into a full electric. Fast forward to 2022, and we have the MercedesAMG EQS 53 4Matic+. Built on the EQ architecture, it's the first battery-electric AMG production model. And, no, its not an electric S-Class with its internal combustion engine swapped for an electric motor. It's a vehicle architecture designed specifically to run on electricity.

One look at the EQS-AMG, and the first word you'd use to describe its design is ‘futuristic.’ The whole idea for Mercedes to give it a pill-shaped bodywork is for maximum efficiency. This gives the car a drag co-efficient of just 0.20. To put in perspective, the asphalt-burning Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, that sells for `6.25 cr has a drag coefficient of 0.38. Unmatched by any BEV, the lower drag co-efficient reduces aerodynamic drag and increases range. Take a close look and you will notice that there is a pop-open slot on the front panel. This is for the wiper washing fluid. This is because the EQS AMG’s hood does not even open. Even if it could open there would be no storage space as the engineers at Mercedes have installed an HVAC unit with a massive air filter that, according to the company, blocks 99.65 per cent of particulate matter. Mercedes calls it Energizing Air Control Plus system and it works along with an air quality sensor that continuously monitors the quality of the outside air drawn in and automatically switches to recirculation mode in the event of elevated pollutant levels.
