For the beginner or the less accomplished player, the main aim is to develop a fundamentally sound method that delivers consistently acceptable results. The more regular golfer needs to build on this, targeting strike quality while ensuring duffs and thins do not put in an appearance. With more clubhead control, the advanced player should be targeting a technique that harnesses the versatility of loft and the forgiveness of sole bounce. In this article I will show you a simple exercise that targets these skill-based objectives. In each case, start slowly, smoothly adding in the pace as your confidence increases.
BREAK 100 Towel Sweep
This exercise is a great way to deal with two common traits that regularly trip up the less-skilled golfer: an excessively out-to-in club path and an overly digging attack angle. You’ll need a bag towel and a tee peg. Then follow these simple steps:
1. Set it up
Fold the towel into a compact rectangle, its length running parallel to your ball-target line. Measure a clubhead’s length from the towel and tee a ball up, leaving a centimetre or so of the peg exposed. Now take your address.
