THE shoplifting epidemic has gone bananas, with criminals now stealing fruit worth only a few pence.
Grocers say thefts of bananas, apples and vegetables are on the rise as hungry folk struggle to afford food.
Greengrocer Ben Selvaratnam said he witnesses up to nine thefts a day and the criminals are becoming increasingly "brazen and aggressive".
Industry sources also claim fruit thefts are increasing nationwide. Mr Selvaratnam, from Croydon, South London, said: "People say, 'It's fruit, it's food... I'm not stealing to sell on. I'm hungry, I'm starving. It&nbsp;doesn't cost much, no one's going to notice. It's right by the door so I'm probably not going to get caught'.
They justify it to themselves that way." The number of shoplifting cases doubled to 16.7 million last year, costing retailers &pound;1.8billion, the British Retail Consortium says. Items such as steak and wine are often targeted, and there are also organised crime thefts to order.
The BRC's Graham Wynn said: "Stealing, however small, is not a victimless crime. The Association of Convenience Stores added: "There is no justification for stealing."
