Gabriel Holt, known as Gabe, was part of the Wales Rugby League Students squad.
He rose through the ranks of rugby league, beginning his journey at the age of five with Atherton Dragons before later joining Wigan St Patricks.
The 21-year-old's passion for rugby was unwavering and he also studied at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in Preston, where he continued to excel both academically and on the field, having recently been selected for the Welsh university team.
The young athlete, from Wigan, won three caps for Wales Students last year and was named in this year's squad for the upcoming Four Nations tournament.
Gabe passed away unexpectedly. The loss of Gabriel has led to an outpouring of grief in the rugby community and the hearts of all those who knew him personally.
Chris Holt, Gabe's father said: "I can't believe it - he was our 'Angel Gabriel' his nickname from when he was born with curly white/blonde hair.
"You never expect to bury your own child.
"Gabe was a bit of a journeyman, starting at Atherton Dragons.
