Amateur competitors from eight to 80 will battle it out in rapid games before one is given the title of Chess Master.
More than 600million adults regularly play, with celebrity fans including Taylor Swift, Anthony Joshua and Madonna.
Malcolm Pein, of The English Chess Federation, said: "When Taylor Swift waxes lyrical about chess openings in her latest album, you know chess has become cool.
"The chess community has waited over 30 years for the game to return to our screens." The show will air on BBC2 next year.
