"BUDGET" airlines can be more expensive than traditional carriers when extra costs are added.
British Airways was cheaper than Ryanair and Wizz Air, research from Which? claimed.
The consumer watchdog analysed the cheapest return flights from London airports to Malaga, Athens and Naples.
The results showed that while budget airlines often had the cheapest headline fares, Ryanair and Wizz Air failed to offer the lowest price when extra costs for selected seats were included.
Unavoidable hidden charges for consumers or "drip pricing" - are being banned under a bill progressing through Parliament.
Optional extras are not included in the legislation, but Which? believes fees for seat selection on flights should also be covered.
Editor Rory Boland said: "If you want to sit next to your kids or take more than a few items of clothes with you, then you'll find better prices elsewhere."
But a Ryanair spokesman blasted the study as "more fake news from Which?".
And a spokeswoman for Wizz Air argued: "Optional add-ons are not required to fly, and we believe that customers should be offered the choice."&nbsp;
