THIS year's Grand National will be the safest ever with horses pampered like pet pooches, say racing chiefs.
They have made six "chunky" changes to the world's richest steeplechase to safeguard the animals.
Ahead of the three-day race meeting which starts tomorrow, Aintree's clerk of the course Sulekha Varma, 39, said: "We have a moral duty to look after animals and that goes for if it's your pet dog or a racehorse."
Saturday's race has been moved forward from last year's 5.15pm start to 4pm to avoid the chance of rain-sodden ground drying out, which would allow the horses to go faster.
The number taking part has been cut from 40 to 34 for more jumping space and the first fence has been moved 60 yards nearer the start to slow the horses down early on.
There will be a standing start to reduce the usual mad dash at the off and there will be no potentially horse-stressing parade of the field before the race.
Finally the height of the 11th fence has been reduced by 2in to 4ft 10in.
Animal Rising, which delayed the start to last year's race when protesters invaded the course, said there would be no demonstration this time.
