A PRECIOUS golden eagle that vanished last year is now believed to have been shot dead.
The female, Merrick, had been relocated from the Angus glens to the Borders two years ago but was reported missing last October.
Police investigators now believe she was killed while roosting in a tree, with those responsible then destroying the bird of prey's satellite tag which tracked her movements.
