"THE AIM WAS TO SET THE WORKS INTO THE SURROUNDING NATURE, PROVIDE NATURAL LIGHT, HARNESS THE FANTASTIC VIEWS, AND PROVIDE A SOCIAL HEART TO THE HOUSE AND FOR THE FAMILY" - ADAM KNIBB

DETAILS
HOUSE Hurdle House
LOCATION Alresford, Hampshire, UK

A rural abode that embodies its country locale in style, this warm, inviting home is tucked into picturesque farmland. Before the renovation, the existing dwelling was made up of a long barn, positioned length-ways down the site, with limited windows and connection to the garden and outdoor spaces. The homeowners wanted a contemporary addition to the house while still maintaining respect for the original barn.

Adam Knibb, director of Adam Knibb Architects Ltd, says the inspiration for the design was all about maximising the views. “The aim was to set the works into the surrounding nature, provide natural light, harness the fantastic views, and provide a social heart to the house and for the family,” he notes.

Given its heritage status, a softly softly approach was called for. Working with the Winchester Conservation Department, the rear bay window was removed and artfully reinstated as a frameless glazed archway from the old to the new.
