THE hybrids of Alstroemeria ligtu are among the most desirable of all herbaceous plants for the garden and for cut flowers for the house. No matter what kind of a heatwave their June-July flowering may coincide with, they will last in water for a fortnight. Their flowers, in shades of pink, carmine, apricot and fawn, are reminiscent of azaleas and have a wonderful freshness. But the story has it that they are difficult and certainly one hears of many cases where gardeners have failed to get them established.
