Design is everywhere - that's one of the first things you learn in design school. From the tube of Boroline languishing in your dresser to handpainted skull-and-bones 'danger' signs that amuse more than alarm, Indians have grown up seeing a distinctive design grammar around them. Overexposure might have invisibilised these visuals, but a few of us do stop to truly observe them or wonder about their history.
BEAUTY IN THE ORDINARY
'Everyday India', a show at 47-A design gallery in Kotachi Wadi, Mumbai, is an illustrated documentation of such printed and painted graphic design samples from India for homegrown products and services. Storefronts & Signages depict hand-illustrated street side scenes that use existing brand imagery, while a collection of Illustrated Specimens puts on display more than 300 retail articles from across the country. This is where nostalgia meets newstalgia - Lijjat Papad and Phantom Cigarettes exist alongside Forest Essentials and Subko Coffee.
