The first season of video-game adaptation Halo focused on Master Chief, aka John-117 (Pablo Schreiber), the leader of an elite team of genetically engineered super-soldiers known as Spartans, created to fight against an alien threat called the Covenant.

Just as Master Chief began to rediscover his humanity, Dr Catherine Halsey (Natascha McElhone), the director of the Spartan programme, carried out an off-the-books upgrade to turn him into an emotionless killing machine.
