THE ACTRESS AND MOM OF THREE OPENS UP ABOUT HER JOYFUL FAMILY LIFE AND HER NEW CAREER MOVE: MUSIC
JEFF NELSON
KATE HUDSON-'I NEVER LOST SIGN IT OF WHAT I LOVED'

All eyes are on Kate Hudson. The star is onstage at a microphone, singing for a small room of A-list friends including Leonardo DiCaprio, Stella McCartney and Zach Braff at the ultra-private Manhattan club Casa Cipriani on May 5. But Hudson’s focus is on her 20-year-old son Ryder, who is watching adoringly from his seat, singing along as she performs her original track “Live Forever.” He inspired the song, which has echoes of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide.” “Oh, I was just a little girl/ Dove deep into the world/ Thought I could take it on/ And you showed up right by my side/ My witness and my life/ Now we’ve grown up in stride,” Hudson sings. As the number ends, Hudson, 45, gathers herself, confiding to the crowd, “I almost cried!”

Hudson’s bond with her oldest child—now a rising college junior—runs deep, and so does her passion for expressing her emotions in song. Talking with People in Brooklyn, she muses about the five love languages—or ways people express and receive love. “There should be a sixth,” she says. “It should be music, because it really is a love language.”
