The first version of this tale comes from the Upanishads. 10 shishyas (students) were studying in an ashram. One day, they went to a feast in the neighbouring village. They had to cross a river. During the crossing, there was a flash flood.
The students were washed away in the torrent of water. With great difficulty, they managed to come ashore. Worried that some of them may have drowned, they suggested a count be held.
One of the students started counting and found that he could only count to nine. Believing that the student had made a mistake, another student made a count. He too stopped at nine. Now the students were worried and started crying loudly.
On hearing their cries, a wandering mendicant came to them. He counted them and saw that they were 10. He immediately saw what the problem was. He asked one of the students to count in front of him. The student counted all the other students and reached a count of nine.
