In the months leading up to his untimely death in 2014, Robin Williams had several new movies in the works, including closing in on a long-awaited sequel to his 2003 smash hit, Mrs Doubtfire. The proposed project would see him reunite with director Chris Columbus for the reboot written by Elf scribe David Berenbaum.

For almost a decade, Williams and Columbus, who had become close friends, struggled to find a suitable story line that could live up to beloved original movie about actor Daniel Hillard (Williams) who disguises himself as a Scottish female housekeeper to spend time with his three children after a bitter split from his wife, Miranda (Sally Field).

“We had a script, and it was a great script,” Columbus told SFGate in 2021. “Robin was prepared to do it. And then, unfortunately, he passed away.”
