IT ONLY TOOK SIX SECONDS...

Having just moved to Omaha, Nebraska, in 2012, David Kroupa decided to try online dating as a way to meet new people. Just recently out of a long-term relationship with the mother of his two children, the mechanic knew he wasn’t really looking for anything serious. After signing up to an online agency, he hit it off with local Shanna ‘Liz’ Golyar. The pair had been in a no-strings-attached relationship for around six months when another woman caught his eye.

David met Cari Farver, 37, when she came into his auto-repair shop and he invited her out for a drink. The night of their first date went pretty well, until there was an awkward encounter after Golyar, 37, arrived unannounced at his apartment to pick something up.

“I walked Cari out the front door and she walked right past Liz,” David, 36, told the US’s ABC News. “They probably saw each other for six seconds.”

The moment, while fleeting, would change all three of their lives, and lead to a murder and an insidious plot of lies and abuse that would take years to unravel.

Golyar, a single mum who ran her own cleaning business, had been the first person David met after he signed up to try online dating.
