Our high school years are often considered the happiest times in our lives, but we often forget they can be fraught with insecurities, petty drama and downright dumb decisions. Thankfully, now that we’re grown-ups, we can move past that, right? Well, maybe. High school reunions have a way of returning us back to our former, awkward selves, which can be especially annoying when you’re trying to show everyone how far you’ve come.
However, Zarife Hardy, director of the Australian School of Etiquette says you’re much more likely to have a good experience if you take the focus off yourself. “Look like you are happy to be there, smile, be genuinely interested in whoever you speak with,” she says. “See it as an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and have fun!”
STUDY UP
Hardy suggests doing some good old-fashioned homework before the big day. “Preparation is key to feeling confident,” she explains. “If there is a Facebook page, be sure to check out who is attending. Also check in with closer friends to see who is attending.”
The best outfit is something that makes you feel comfortable. “Find something in your wardrobe that you feel great in,” she adds. “Don’t leave this for the night before as you may want to buy something new for the event. Be sure to read the invitation so you know what the dress code is and talk to friends that may be attending. You might decide to go together.”
USE DIPLOMACY
Remember, people will want to know what you’ve been up to in the last few years. “Be prepared to be asked the obvious questions, like what you have been doing since finishing school,” Hardy says.
