Farmers have been using MAR (managed aquifer recharge) for decades without calling it by that name. Their ground dams catch rainfall run-off and the stored water seeps down into the aquifer below. But these dams silt up, sealing the dam floor and preventing infiltration. Then, more water evaporates than actually reaches the aquifer. The remedy is to get rid of silt by digging it out mechanically. With the silt gone, surface water can infiltrate more quickly as it need not percolate through the mud.
